North West Highlands Geopark

The incredible landscape of Scotland's north west corner is underpinned by extraordinary geology.  We lie within the North West Highlands UNESCO Geopark and offer an ideal centre for exploration.  Our Geopark was awarded UNESCO status in recognition of our world class geological heritage and has the same level of recognition as World Heritage Sites.

In the Geopark you are able to experience the incredible legacy left by an extraordinary geological past stretching back 3000 million years to some of the oldest rocks on Earth. Our mountains and coast, our flora and fauna, our communities and culture – they all owe a great deal to the special geology of our area. Ranger and specialist guided Geotours help make this accessible to all.

Whether you sail by our spectacular cliffed coast between Sheigra and Sandwood, climb on the ancient rocks of Arkle and Fionaven, walk the Oldshoremore machair and beach, visit Kinlochbervie Harbour nestled in its fjord or photograph the patterns of the crofting landscape of Achriesgill – you will experience a place where the natural and human worlds combine in a unique way.
